Empowering Immigrant Tech Entrepreneurs: The Journey from LatAm Startups to Global Startups

When I founded LatAm Startups in Toronto, my mission was straightforward but ambitious. I observed numerous tech companies owned by immigrants struggling for recognition and funding. Seven years ago, they barely received financial backing. There was a clear underestimation of their potential and what these tech-savvy newcomers could offer.

Through relentless efforts, we proved these companies’ growth potential, advocating for a tailored approach to support them. Unlike traditional Canadian startups, these companies required unique nurturing due to their diverse backgrounds.

I’m thrilled to see major accelerators and incubators now welcoming startups from our portfolio. Their adoption of our program models is both flattering and a testament to our success. LatAm Startups has evolved into Global Startups, extending our support beyond Latin America to other emerging markets.

However, a critical gap remained – funding for these newcomers. Drawing parallels with the challenges faced by women in fundraising, immigrant entrepreneurs often confront biases and communication barriers. Recognizing their potential, I decided to take a bold step with GSA Ventures, committed to being the first to invest in these promising companies.

I am grateful for the experienced professionals supporting this endeavour. Alejandro Vivanco, with his extensive experience at the Toronto Stock Exchange and as a mentor, Markus Schreyer, a veteran in fundraising in Latin America and the USA, and Peter Elkins, an investor from Victoria BC with a wealth of experience in the Western Canadian investment landscape. I would also like to provide a special thank you to VC Lab and the Decile Hub for their invaluable guidance.

GSA Ventures is just the beginning. I invite you to join our newsletter and be a part of a community that champions tech newcomers in North America and beyond. Together, we can foster an environment where immigrant tech entrepreneurs don’t just survive but thrive.
